Bret Hemphill, Co-Owner, Golden Spikes Baseball Academy
A co-founder of Golden Spikes Baseball Academy, Bret Hemphill burst onto the Major League Baseball scene in 1999 for the Anaheim Angels when he collected a pair of hits in his first two at bats, one from each side of the plate. Bret is one of only a handful of players in the game's rich history to accomplish that feat. As a switch-hitting catcher, Bret played 7.5 years of professional baseball with the Angels organization and his career included a pair minor
league all star game appearances, a pair of championships and, during 1995 and 1996 seasons, he was named the Best Defensive Catcher in the Angels' organization by Baseball America. Hemphill finished his professional career with a .270 batting average.
Bret has parlayed his professional experience into a standout career as a coach, recently completing a five-year stint at Sierra College, leaving this season to dedicate his time to the Golden Spikes Academy full time.He also spent time developing young players as a member of the Hard90 baseball staff and as a coach at Whitney High School in Rocklin. At the Golden Spikes Academy, Bret specializes in catching and hitting clinics and also coaches in The Golden Spikes competitive tournament team baseball program. Bret believes that his lifelong love of playing and coaching baseball helps him develop successful players at all levels. He stresses that his students should attack the game with enthusiasm and passion. Hemphill calls upon his vast knowledge, stemming from his playing days as a standout defensive catcher with the Angels' organization, for his rigorous training programs for catchers.
Prior to his professional baseball career, Bret was a standout at perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton where he was part of two teams that
played at the College World Series (’92 & ’94). He played for future Hall of Fame Coach Augie Garrido and current Oregon Head Coach George Horton. He was
voted “Best Defensive Player” for the 1994 team. Bret was named honorable mention All-Big West in 1994 and was voted to the All-Tournament Team for the
1994 Midwest I Regional. Bret believes that his time playing baseball at the college level at Fullerton was not only the most rewarding time he had in
baseball, but the most educational as well. "I really believe Coach Garrido and Coach Horton taught me how to play the game the right way," Hemphill says.
Bret conducts group and private catching lessons. If you are interested in scheduling a session, or want more information, contact Bret at
